Feeling Camera-Shy? How a Fantasy Portrait Photography Session Can Help You Finally Feel Like Yourself

Let me guess.

You’ve been deep in the scroll. Saving fantasy portraits to a secret folder. Imagining what it would feel like to actually be in one of those images.

And then the little voice shows up right on cue.

“That’s not really for someone like me.”

Maybe you don’t feel confident enough yet. Maybe you think you need to have it all together before you’d dare put on a crown and pick up a sword.

Here’s what I need you to hear before you talk yourself out of it:

That feeling is exactly why this kind of session exists.

The Shift I See Over and Over Again

I can read a client’s internal monologue the second they step in front of my camera.

Often it goes something like:

“I feel so silly. I must look so awkward. Why did I even do this?”

And I’m not gonna lie. That feeling is real, and it’s valid.

But here’s the part that keeps me doing this work.

Because somewhere in the middle of the session, something shifts. The energy changes. And suddenly that same person is thinking:

“Hell yes. I am SUCH a baddie. I cannot wait to tell everyone about this!”

That transformation doesn’t happen just because time passes in front of a camera.

It happens because we’re doing more than adjusting poses and lighting. We’re actively chipping away at the bullshit that’s been telling you that you can’t be powerful, confident, or fully in charge of your own story.

What a Fantasy Portrait Session Is Actually For

Here’s something I will stand behind completely:

Fantasy portrait photography is for everyone.

Not just the people who already walk into a room like they own it. Not just clients who’ve been cosplaying for a decade or have a closet full of elaborate costumes.

Everyone.

Because everyone has a piece of themselves that doesn’t get to show up in everyday life.

Sure, you might be an absolute baddie at work. But how often do you actually get to pick up a sword, put on a crown, and fully live in your main character energy?

Outside of conventions and themed parties? Pretty much never.

Some people book because they want to feel beautiful. Others don’t care as much about “pretty.” They want to feel powerful, fierce, and completely unstoppable. And there’s every version of that in between.

All of it is a completely valid reason to show up.

This kind of session isn’t about performing confidence for someone else. It’s about giving yourself permission to fully embody who you actually are underneath all the noise.

The Biggest Myth I Want to Clear Up Right Now

I run into this one constantly, and I want to address it head-on before it stops you from reaching out.

You do not have to already feel the part before you show up.

So many people think that to look like a powerful warrior queen in their photos, they need to walk in already feeling powerful and confident and like don’t take no crap from no one.

Like the transformation in the photos should just be a reflection of something they already have fully figured out.

That is not how this works and that’s the WHOLE FREAKIN POINT.

Yes, we’re going to get you the crown. The sword. Incredible hair and makeup. A set that is absolutely jaw-dropping. The visual transformation is real and it is stunning.

But the deeper work happening during the session is the inner shift.

The “I actually feel like myself right now” moment.

The part where everything that’s been telling you that you can’t be confident, or in charge, or at the top of your game starts to loosen its grip.

That’s what my clients actually walk away with. Not just a gallery of gorgeous images (though those are very much happening) but a reminder of who they really are and what they’re actually made of.

When you look at those photos later, it’s not just a pretty picture.

It’s proof.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what actually creates that shift during a session:

Posing guidance that feels empowering, not fake: I coach you through every position so you feel strong and natural, not like you’re just standing there hoping for the best.

Facial expression coaching: Yes, this is a real thing, and it makes a massive difference in how confident you look and feel.

A zero-pressure environment: No judgment here, ever, for any reason.

Permission to be a little ridiculous: If a dad joke is what it takes to get a genuine smile, I am absolutely pulling one out (I have a list saved on my phone).

Why This Actually Matters

The magic that happens on set doesn’t have to stay on set.

I genuinely believe that. And I see it proved true over and over again.

Clients come in uncertain. They leave walking taller. And when they get their gallery back, they’re not just looking at images. They’re looking at a version of themselves they maybe hadn’t fully met before.

That is not a small thing.

That’s the whole thing.

If you’ve been on the fence because you don’t feel “ready” so hear this clearly:

You don’t have to earn your way into this experience. You already deserve it.

The session is exactly the place where you work through the “not ready” feeling and come out the other side with images that remind you of your own radiance.

Everyone deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and photographed like the main character they actually are.
