What Makes a Fantasy Event Actually Worth Your Ticket Price (And How to Tell Before You Buy)
Fantasy balls and bookish events are popping up everywhere right now, and honestly it’s the most exciting thing. A few years ago, I remember scrolling Instagram and seeing ads for a bookish ball on the East Coast, thinking it looked like the coolest thing I had ever seen – and then realizing there was absolutely nothing like it in the Midwest. Not a single event. Fast forward to today, and Kansas City has ~options~. The whole country has options. Which is amazing… and also means you have a decision to make. Because not every fantasy event is created equal, and your ticket budget deserves some thought before you click “purchase.”
I’ve attended several of these events around the country as the official photographer, shooting both general event coverage and portrait sessions that let guests actually see how incredible they look in their element. I’ve seen what works, what falls flat, and what makes guests walk away feeling like they lived inside a fairytale for a night. So whether you’re a guest trying to choose your next event or an organizer wondering how to make yours unforgettable, I wanted to share what I’ve noticed and what I think really matters.
The Fantasy Event Boom Is Real (And So Is the Competition)
The growth of this whole scene is genuinely wonderful to watch. Events like these give people a reason to put on their most magical outfit, step into a story, and connect with other people who love the same things they do. Which is so, so worth celebrating.
But with more events comes more competition, and with more competition comes more variation in quality. There have been cancellations. There have been events that didn’t meet expectations. And for guests spending real money on a ticket, that stings.
So before we even get into what makes an event shine, here’s a quick but important note: do a small amount of research on the organizer before you buy. Do they communicate clearly? Do they have reviews or a track record? How do they present themselves as a business? For first-time events it can be harder to find this information, but it’s still worth a quick look. Your peace of mind is part of the investment.

What Actually Makes a Fantasy Event Worth It
Once you’ve done your homework on the organizer, the next question is: am I going to get the experience that justifies this ticket price? Here’s what I look for, based on everything I’ve seen at events across the country.
Immersive Performers Who Actually Bring You Into the Story
This is the big one for me. There is a meaningful difference between cosplayers who look amazing and walk around, and trained performers and improv actors who are genuinely in character – who know how to pull you into the world, respond to what you say, and make you feel like you are actually part of a story that night.
I recently had the privilege of being the official photographer for an event in San Francisco called Fantasy Fête, put on by Booked Entertainment. This was one area where they absolutely excelled. Every performer had an original character they created and performed as for the entire evening. There were specific things you could say to each character that would prompt a unique response – little side quests, mini games, moments of magic. They also had trinket trading, where each performer had a personalized trinket tied to their character.
It got guests talking to each other, talking to the cast, and genuinely engaging with the world around them. That’s the kind of immersion that makes an event feel like more than a party.

Entertainment Beyond Just the DJ
A great DJ can absolutely make or break an event – I’m not dismissing that at all. But if the only entertainment on the lineup is a DJ, that’s worth noting when you’re weighing ticket cost.
Look for events that also feature:
- Live vocalists
- Dancers
- Acrobats
- Aerialists
- Any other live performance that gives you something to experience beyond the dance floor
Dark Flame Society here in Kansas City did this really well at their Fantasy Ball last year. I kept turning around and finding a new performance happening – a singer here, aerialists there, burlesque performers commanding the room. It kept the energy alive all night and gave guests something to be genuinely wowed by. That “wow” factor is what makes a night feel worth every penny.

Activities and Games That Keep You Engaged
If the event looks like it’s mostly “show up, drink, and dance,” that can be a fun night – but it might not justify a higher ticket price on its own. Look for events that include games or activities woven into the experience, things that keep you engaged throughout the night and give you something to do besides wait for the next song.
The trinket trading at Fantasy Fate is a great example of this done well. It gave guests a reason to move around, interact, and stay curious about what else might be happening in the room.
A Market That Actually Fits the Vibe
Okay, I know this might sound counterintuitive when we’re talking about getting your money’s worth – but a well-curated vendor market can genuinely add to the experience rather than take from your wallet.
The key word is curated. The best markets at these events focus on:
- Handmade, human-crafted items
- Vendors whose work fits the theme authentically
- Things you genuinely cannot find anywhere else
And I’ll just say it plainly: I am so tired of seeing tables full of 3D printed dragons. I walk right past those booths. What stops me in my tracks is something original, something clearly made with care, something I have never seen at any other event. That’s what a market should feel like – an extension of the magic, not a generic craft fair that wandered in from somewhere else.
If you’re an event organizer, be intentional about who you invite to your market. It reflects on the whole experience.

Why This All Matters (For Guests and Organizers Alike)
Here’s the thing: fantasy events are not just parties. For a lot of us, they are a real escape. A chance to put on something beautiful, step into a story, and spend an evening surrounded by people who get it. That experience has real value, and it deserves real investment from the people putting it together.
As a guest, you now have choices – which is genuinely great. But it also means it’s worth being a little discerning so that you spend your money on the nights that are actually going to deliver.
As an event organizer, the bar is rising. That’s a good thing. It means the best events are going to keep getting better, and guests will remember the ones that truly transported them.
I’ve been lucky enough to photograph some really incredible moments at these events – guests seeing their portraits and having that “oh wow, that’s me” reaction, performers fully committed to their characters, rooms lit up with people who chose to be exactly where they were. That’s what this is all for.

What’s Coming Up and Who to Follow
If you’re in the Kansas City area, keep your eyes on Dark Flame Society – they have a convention coming up this November that has expanded from a one-day event to a full three-day experience. It’s Norse mythology and Viking themed with a broader fantasy con feel, and based on what they’ve put together before, it is going to be something. You can find them on Instagram at @darkflamesociety.
And even if Booked Entertainment doesn’t have another event on the calendar right now, absolutely follow them. Their talent, their performers, and the level of care they put into Fantasy Fate was genuinely impressive. When they announce something new, you’ll want to be the first to know.
A couple of other events that I’ve loved have been St Louis Starfall Ball and Fae Ball!
Want to Capture Your Magical Night?
This is exactly the kind of event where having portraits taken is 100% worth it. You put time, creativity, and love into your look – you deserve photos that actually do it justice. As a photographer who specializes in fantasy and cosplay photography, I offer portrait sessions at themed events that capture not just how you look, but how you feel in those moments.
If you’re attending a fantasy event in the Kansas City area and want to talk about portrait options, I’d love to hear from you. Head over to anniebethphotographykc.com and let’s make your magical night something you can look at for years to come.
Because you put on that outfit for a reason, bestie. Let’s make sure it’s documented beautifully.
